Fit by 50? That’s my Goal
Is it possible to really get into some sort of shape by my 50th birthday? That was the questioned I asked myself about 2 months ago when I realized that this year, I was turning 50. Is it possible to be Fit by 50?
Quite honestly 50 years of age kind of snuck up on me, I don’t feel like I’m almost 50, though I probably look it. OK, some days I feel like 50, maybe more, but that is not all the time. I’ve been “playing” with my fitness for years, actually decades, kind of getting into shape and then letting life get in the way, stopping and losing all of my progress.
So what happened was that in one day in May, 2017, I realized that I was turning 50 in 6 months, and I was amazed that I had let so much time slip away, and I had not really done a lot of things that I wanted to do by now. One of which was to get back in to seriously good condition. So I know that probably sounds a little weird, especially from someone my age, it sounds like something someone half my age may say. Well I had been in great shape before, even competed a little bit, did the bodybuilding thing once, and really enjoyed the feeling of being in the best shape of my life. I felt like nothing could stop me, and that I could do anything I set my mind to. I have been saying that I wanted to feel that way again (not to compete), for years if not decades.
Well now as I’m quickly approaching 50, I realized that I don’t have too many decades to do this if it is ever going to happen. I told myself that I really wanted to do this, it was now or never, so I choose now.
I figured that even if I didn’t come close to what I looked and felt like at 23, it would still be the best that I have felt in years. As some of you may or may not know, as you get older things are a little different from when you are in your 20’s, such as:
- You do move a little slower (especially in the morning).
- You don’t recover as quickly from exercising (or hard work).
- Your metabolism is slower (you can’t eat everything and not show it).
- At least for me, I’m busier; I don’t have the time or the patience for long workouts, or countless hours in the gym.
- The better shape or condition you are in as you get older, the easier it is to get older (you don’t feel your age).
So for me this will be a challenge, but a win – win challenge. There are more reasons to do this than to just watch another birthday roll by and do nothing. But let me be honest with whoever is reading this, I am first and foremost doing this for me, and my family, I want to be around a lot longer and I want to spend as much quality time as I can with my wife. Secondly I am documenting this in hopes that it inspires someone else to take a look at their life and make a change. It doesn’t have to be your 50th birthday; it could be your 70th, 40th or even 17th birthday! If you’re not happy with the way things are, change it. It’s not always easy, but you can do anything if you put your mind to it.
Fit by 50, the Plan
So the plan is pretty simple, get fit by the time I’m 50. Sounds easy enough, but I only have 6 months, so this is what I’m attempting to do; the basics, exercise and nutrition. There are no shortcuts to getting fit, you have to put in the work, you have to exercise and for me I had to change the way I eat. I’m also going to video the updates of my progress and any problems that arise during the way.
