Book Review: Praying Upside Down
What a delightful book and perspective of prayer. Kelly wrote this book from her own perspective, as an artist. It’s filled with creativity and ways to make prayer exciting for those that are struggling with their prayer life.
In this book, she reminds us that prayer doesn’t have to be boring and repetitious. God created us to be like Him, creative. He never desired for us to be lifeless and robotic in life and certainly not in the way we interact with Him each day.
The reader will find a lot of wonderful and creative ideas they can use to not only meet with God each day, but also be transformed by the process of connecting with Him in a delightful and fulfilling new way. Kelly also covers things that may be hindering our ability to connect with God and what we can do to correct the situation.
This book is such a refreshing, encouraging and transforming way to look at prayer and how we can use it each day to draw ever closer to the glorious God we serve.
My thoughts about Praying Upside Down
I got this great book from a dear friend (thanks Wendy!) at a time when I needed it the most. At that time, my husband and I had been unemployed for close to one year and we were fighting to maintain our faith during that difficult season of our lives.
This book allowed me to see prayer in a new light and find new ways to reach out to God. It allowed me to see prayer from a different perspective. We all know that it can become so easy to get into a routine, sadly that can include our prayer life.
I really enjoyed Kelly’s approach to prayer. This book was filled with ideas that can stir the imagination and heart of any believer. God truly made us in His image and that means we have the honor and blessing to be creative.
I will enjoy putting to practice these wonderful, colorful ideas for years to come.
Would I Recommend Praying Upside Down
Yes. I believe this book can give any believer a new outlook on prayer and how they approach God on a daily basis. This is a great book for anyone that struggles to maintain their prayer life and stay not only connected with God, but also continue to draw closer to Him with each passing day.
He alone is our everything, our life source and when we disconnect from Him, even for a short time, a void is created that this world cannot fill. It’s so critical to stay connected to our Creator and the lover of our soul. It’s a matter of faith and maintaining our hope and joy each day to plug into the source of all our power and all we need to not only make it through each day, but to conquer it for His glory.
This would also make a great gift for that person that loves art and any form of creativity. It will delight their heart as they connect with God through the joy of art–which Kelly reminds us can come in so many forms.
This is also a great gift for the person that struggles with the monotony of prayer. They may find their prayer life is either boring, lifeless or none existent. They may confess they either don’t know how to pray (knowing what words to say or how approach God) or don’t see any point it it, as prayer for them is just repeating what they’ve heard—we’ve all struggled with prayer at some point in our faith walk. But thankfully, we have great tools like Praying Upside Down to help us overcome these struggles with prayer.
Like any relationship, it’s about our heart and desire to find ways to stay connected to the One that loves us beyond all human comprehension and Praying Upside Down will help us do just that, for both our eternal benefit and His glory.
And, that’s a wrap…Praying Upside Down

“Praying upside down doesn’t involve swinging from your knees on a jungle gym. It doesn’t require an inversion table or a bungee harness. In fact, it’s much scarier: It’s all about asking God to let you see. Truly see. To see Him at work, see Him in action, and let go of expectations. It might mean He’ll throw your world out of orbit, turn your thoughts topsy-turvy, and change you from the inside out. It will definitely mean your perspective will never be the same again.”
