Why Deliverance Sometimes Fails

Why does deliverance sometimes fail?

This is, in essence, the same question raised by Jesus’ first disciples. When these disciples were unable to cast out a spirit of epilepsy, they were puzzled and asked Jesus the reason for their failure.

Jesus gave a multi-part answer which leads us to take into account the petitioner’s faith, the deliverance minister’s capability, the spiritual qualifications that must be met, the strength of the spirit confronted and the strategy of warfare employed.

Obstacles to Deliverance

In particular, there are myths, misunderstandings and misinformation concerning the ministry of deliverance. The first battleground is in the minds of men, where Satan has sown questions, doubts and fears that become hindrances to involvement in this valid, biblical ministry. Those who want an answer should be given an answer. Ignorance, prejudice and fear are hurdles that some sincere Christians must get over before they are willing to become involved in spiritual warfare. Before one can bring himself to obedience to deal with the devil and demons, certain obstacles must be overcome in one’s mind.

There are a lot of misunderstandings about deliverance and this booklet helps to clear up some of the misconceptions about deliverance and what might be the cause of obstacles that is either keeping someone from being set free or remaining free, once they’ve been delivered from either demonic possession (non-believer) or demonic influence (both believer and non-believer).

My thoughts about Obstacles to Deliverance

I found this booklet to be informative, concise and helpful in learning about the various ways that deliverance can be hindered or thwarted by the enemy. I don’t believe deliverance is hard for the believer, because it’s the Holy Spirit that does the work, by the finished work of Jesus and the authority that He’s given us. With that said, I do understand that there are laws that govern the spiritual realm. Oddly, for being so evil, Satan, his fallen angels and his demonic cohorts are rather bent on being legalistic. If there is a legal foothold that the enemy can use to gain access to unbelievers or influence all of mankind, it will take full advantage of any and all opportunities to do so.

In Obstacles to Deliverance, the reader is taken through a spiritual checklist to help narrow down the possible cause(s) that could be hindering them from seeing the deliverance they are seeking and that has been granted by the finished work of our Lord Jesus. This book will also help the believer to understand what may be preventing them from remaining free, once deliverance has been accomplished in their life.

I fully agree with Hammond, when he stated that deliverance is not for the unbeliever. Not that deliverance is not available to them, but that only a believer can truly be set free, because to be set free one needs to believe in the One through whom we find such freedom, our Lord Jesus. There is no other name that the demons are subject to, so if we try to engage in deliverance without being a believer (as either a minister of deliverance or the one to be delivered), we could find ourselves in a situation like the seven sons of Sceva (see Acts 19:14-16). While they were the sons of a “chief of the priest,” they did not have the authority granted to them, through the belief in Jesus, the Christ. You can hold the highest religious position available or be a minister’s child, but without the authority granted to the believer through the finished work of our Lord Jesus, there will be no good and lasting fruit. And, worse still, the unbeliever can experience what Jesus warned of in Matthew 12:43-45 and Luke 11:24-26, of seven worse spirits coming where their is room for them.

On the note of demonic deliverance, I don’t believe demon possession can be applied to the believer, because I don’t believe we can be demonically possessed…for how will demons dwell where God and His Holy Spirit dwells, within us? But, I do believe we can be demonically influenced in our fallen world. But, the good news is that we will never be tempted without a way of escape and through His strength. (see 1 Corinthians 10:13)

I did disagree with Hammond on one point in the booklet. He contends that Satan’s kingdom cannot be divided. I respectfully disagree. There are a lot of groups in this world that we would say are under demonic influence, like gangs, prisoners, the Islamic nations and they war against one another all the time! There is no loyalty to be found in Satan nor in his followers and thus, we can see all around us that while they can be fully focused and united in denying God, rebelling against Him, seeking to destroy His imagers (believers) on earth, they also have zero loyalty to their varying sects.

Let’s take a look at what Jesus said about it:

And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city house divided against itself shall not stand. And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?   Matthew 12:25-26

I believe it’s not that Satan and his kingdom will not war amongst themselves and be divided in every sense of the word, but rather that you will not find Satan, in any capacity, assisting in casting out the demonic possession nor demonic influence from people. He would be working against his own goal to kill and destroy as many people as possible.

I found this booklet to be very helpful in laying out a battle plan that is biblically sound, to find victory in the lives of believers and how to minister to non-believers that seek true deliverance.

Would I Recommend Obstacles to Deliverance

I would, without hesitation. I believe this is a book that should be in every believer’s home. Why? Because I’m tired of seeing my fellow brothers and sisters getting pummeled by the enemy on every front. It just doesn’t have to be that way, according to Luke 10:19 KJV

Behold, I have given unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

We are overcomers and more than conquerors and can do all things through Christ who gives us strength! We are co-heirs with Christ Jesus! We are far more of a threat to the enemy and his followers than we have yet to realize. When we get this sorted out in our hearts and heads, the gates of hell will not stand a chance and hell itself will find it has far less on it’s waiting list to enter it’s fiery door.

Jesus has done His part and granted to us all that we need, now it ‘s up to us to do our part. Sometimes, that begins with learning what is available to us and how to go about finding the victory that He has laid up for us to take hold of, in His Name, by His finished work and for His eternal glory and our good.
