Book Review: Gods & Kings

Gods and & Kings is the first book that I’ve read by Lynn Austin and I was not sure what to expect. I was curious to know how close she would hold to the Scriptures with her story. I was pleasantly surprised to find that she stayed faithful to His Word.

In this historical fiction, we get a glimpse into what the life of young Hezekiah’s life might have been like and the many struggles the first-born son of a pagan worshipping king may have faced. We see how his father, King Ahaz, with his fear, as well as his pagan worship, shaped the mind and heart of Hezekiah. See how Hezekiah goes from fear to faith and the path his faith takes as he is subjected to the tyrannical reign of his paranoid father. Lynn did a great job developing the characters in this book. She used words that allowed me to be transported into the story, every reader’s hope. The settings and scenes were well done. The overall theme of the story was good too.

I really appreciate the fact that this is Christian Historical Fiction. I love a good fiction novel and even better if it’s a historical novel. I was pleasantly surprised by her creative writing style and her way of painting pictures with her words. It’s wonderful when an author can engage you in their book so much that you forget where you are. I loved that I laughed, cried, mourned, rejoiced, winced, was sickened and at times I cheered. Novels hold the exciting potential to give us wonderful reading experience and for me, this book delivered.

Would I recommend Gods & Kings? Absolutely. It’s a great read. It has a wonderful pace and story. She did such a fantastic job that as I sensed a certain point coming in the story, I laid the book aside for several days to put off facing what I believed was coming… I’m glad that I picked it back up to finish it.

Gods & Kings is filled with action, suspense, tragedy, romance, heartache, heartbreak, redemption, love, faithfulness, determination, sacrifice (both the good and bad kind) and a nice array of other emotions.

I do not believe you will be disappointed in reading this story. I’m looking forward to starting the second book in this series, Song of Redemption, soon.
