Book Review: Awaken

Author: Priscilla Shirer

Publisher: B&H Publishing Group

Back Cover: Awaken

The devotionals you’ll encounter here, day by day, are personal whispers from God’s Spirit to my own soul over the last decade. I didn’t initially write them with the intention of publishing them, but simply to chronicle my own personal time with the Lord, captured in store-bought spiral notebooks filled with wide-ruled paper.

These passages and devotional thoughts have challenged me, at other times encouraged me, but every time have transformed me in some significant way–redirecting my focus, shifting my perspective, compelling me to action, and purifying my inner motivations.

I’m praying you’ll be beckoned away each day from the fast-paced, temporal whirlwind of lesser (though necessary) tasks and be refocused on greater things–that aren’t applauded and appreciated by most but are eternally recognized by One…the One who wants to Awaken you each day to the sound of His voice.

Book Review: Awaken

Priscilla Shirer did it again! I was given an opportunity by B& H Publishing Group to review this book and give my honest thoughts and opinion on it. I found this both hard to put down and wanting to intentionally slow down to glean the handfuls of on purpose that I found on each page.

Awaken is filled with wonderful stories that help bring the Scripture to life and practical use in our everyday lives. You too may find that once you open this devotional you will have trouble resisting the urge to keep turning the pages.

The devotional is filled with Scripture, stories providing practical application for our lives and at the end of each day there is “He Speaks to Me,” that asks questions helping us to dig deeper to hear His voice and feel His tender love more.

My thoughts about Awaken

This is a 90-Day devotional that I read it in 2.5 days. I truly wanted to slow down, but also had trouble laying it down. Each day propelled me deeper into the arms of our loving Father. I absolutely adore Priscilla’s writing style and her heart to share God’s love with us all. Each day, I found that I longed for a deep, closer relationship with the lover of my soul and my heart burned to hear more from Him. There were times when I was pierced with conviction and yet, I could also feel the soothing, healing flow of His grace, love and forgiveness.

I really enjoy Priscilla’s writing style and the grace, love and mercy that flows from God through her heart, onto the pages of her books. I was sure I’d glean a lot from this devotional and I was not disappointed and I don’t think you will be either.

One day, I trust I will pick this book up again and read it. Only next time, I will go much slower and be more intentional. I will take the time slow down to hear the beckoning of our Lord, to let go of what I have and open my heart to all that He has for me.

Would I Recommend Awaken

Yes. Whether you’re a seasoned member of the devotions club or you are just dipping your feet into the healing pool they can offer, I believe that Awaken, has something for everyone. Without a doubt, you will feel our loving Father tug at your heart strings, offering you the most gracious and yet unfair exchange. He will trade you all of your turmoil, trouble, baggage, and sometimes plain old messiness, for all the wonders and goodness He has prepared for you.

I believe Awaken will truly do just that—it will awaken your heart to hear His heart beating just for you.

And, that’s a wrap…Awaken

“Somewhere along the way as I’ve grown older, I’ve discovered how much treasure is available beyond the surface reading of a Bible verse. I’ve learned not just to scan it but to do business with it—to wait underneath the revealing spotlight of God’s Spirit until some aspect of my frailty is exposed and brought to the tenderness of His sanctifying work.”
