Book Review: A Journey To Victorious Praying

This is a 30-day devotional about finding discipline and delight in our prayer lives. Bill Thrasher has an easy-to-read writing style that I really appreciate. He uses testimonies, others as well as his own, to help reinforce the principles he shares about prayer.

I think Pastor Erwin Luther summed this book up wonderfully when he said, “This book is worthy of your consideration because of its simplicity and practicality. Here we learn not so much the theology of prayer as the practice of it; we are given examples of how to pray and what to do when our prayer life becomes routine, unsatisfying, and sometimes non-existent…In the end, it is not knowing about prayer that will change our lives, but rather actually doing it.”

We often hear that knowledge is power, but not too long ago, I was praying and I believe the Holy Spirit helped me to better understand where the power actually is. If you did not see my post on Instagram, this is essentially what it said, that knowledge is good and necessary, but the real power is in taking action on the knowledge we have. For instance, knowing that salvation is only through Christ Jesus is important for sure, but unless we take action and actually ask Him to forgive us of our sins and invite Him into our hearts and lives… there will be no real power that gets transferred from His finished work to our great need for eternal salvation. This quote above, reminded me of that lesson. We can know about prayer, but there is no power in the knowledge of prayer, but rather when we actually begin to call upon God for our every need and to simply draw closer to Him.

This book helps us to better put power in the action of prayer, rather than to simply teach us the theological significance of it. I’m not knocking theology, my husband has a Master in Divinity, but even he will tell you that theology is useful and important, but it is not until we take action on what we learn that we begin to see real power…and I’m not speaking our own power, but rather God’s power, in our lives and the lives of others. This book helps us to put purposeful motion into our passion to pray and draw closer to God.

My thoughts about A Journey To Victorious Praying

I’ve often heard that if you don’t feel close to God, it’s not God that moved. Early in my Christian walk, I wondered what that really meant and how did I move so far and so easily away from Him. The reasons can vary from sin, to simply not letting Him have His rightful place of being top priority in our lives. For various reasons, we can suddenly find that we aren’t either praying at all or less than we’d like to and sometimes, when we pray, it can even become very routine if we aren’t watchful of distractions that seek to keep us from drawing close to Him.

Whether it’s for those that have had a very long and fruitful prayer life or for those that need to reignite the passion of prayer, books like, A Journey To Victorious Praying, can help us stay on track,  I found myself being encouraged daily to draw ever closer to the lover of my soul, to the One that not only created me, but desires to fellowship with me continuously. He longs to be part of every aspect of my life. He wants to share so much of His heart with each of us, but in order to share His heart with us, we need to be sensitive to hearing His voice and that happens as we spend time with Him in prayer.

While I believe that He longs to hear our every need and concern, I also believe that prayer offers us so much more than the things we see in the physical realm. I believe there is a spiritual battle the wages daily and He would also like to use us in the battle, but again, this would require that we are sensitive to His voice, through the joy of daily prayer. There is so much of His heart that He wants to share, so much of Himself that I believe He longs to pour into each of our hearts and lives, but this will likely only happen, as we press in daily to seek not what He can do for us, but rather to seek Him…knowing that He knows our needs long before we do.

There are times that I love my prayer life and the closeness I feel to our loving Father. There are other times that I feel that we aren’t nearly as close as we once were and I’m left wondering what happened? How did I drift so far from Him, that I’m not praying nearly like I had been…not just in time, but in the earnestness of wanting to know Him and stay close to Him. Life happens and our walk of faith can ebb and flow with life, but just because life gets between us and God, doesn’t mean that it has to remain that way.

A Journey to Victorious Praying is a call to greater depths, not in a religious manner, but in a relational manner to the One that longs to be closer to you than anyone else, the Creator of all things, who knows you by name.

Would I Recommend A Journey To Victorious Praying

Yes. Without a single doubt, this book will help us draw closer to God by way of prayer. I believe new believers, seasoned believers and even intercessors can glean tips and encouragement from his book to help them draw ever closer to God. I believe that if we desire to be close to Him, it delights Him tremendously and when we seek for ways to make this a priority in our lives, I believe all heaven rejoices.

This book is written as a 30-day daily devotional, allowing you to have time to put what you read into action. I think it’s also okay to take this book and read one section a week…really allowing the principles of this book to transform our prayer lives. With that much time, we can open our hearts to allow the Holy Spirit to bring prayer to life for each of us, as I trust we can’t want to be closer to Him than He desires to be to us. He’s ready whenever we are. He’s patiently waiting for us to lean in and hear His heartbeat for not only us, but for the world. He longs to meet us as often as we are willing through the gift and blessing of prayer.

And, that’s a wrap…A Journey To Victorious Praying

“Nothing is a greater joy in my life than the privilege of knowing Jesus.”

Bill Thrasher, A Journey To Victorious Praying

And, what better way is there to get to know anyone than to spend quality time with them? Prayer, where we have the privilege of knowing Jesus better and draw closer to Him. I believe it’s in being close to Him that we find the victory and delight we seek in not only our prayer life, but in our whole life.
